Save Fleet Pond!
Please sponsor me and help raise funds for the Clearwater campaign, set up by the Fleet Pond Society to raise some of the money needed to dredge and restore the pond.
I have been a member of the Fleet Pond Society for many years and18 months ago I joined the committee and became more aware of the problems facing the pond.
Last year a fellow committee member cycled to Liverpool and back, so I thought this year would be my turn and set about thinking of something a little different and definitely challenging. The result is a walk lasting 24 hours in and around the Pond's nature reserve, with the idea that people can sponsor me and also pay for the "privilege" of walking with me for an hour or two.
My mission begins at 7.30pm on Friday 24th June and the challenge for me is to keep walking – for 24 hours – finishing at 7.30pm on Saturday 25th June

mandy is raising money for Fleet Pond Society:
Fleet Pond, Hampshire's largest freshwater lake, has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was the fishery for the Priory at Winchester. In 1954 the pond and its reedbeds, fens and dry heathland was one of the first nature reserves to be granted Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) status. Now it is silting up badly because of local developments and is in danger of losing its SSSI status, possibly even disappearing completely. Imagine Fleet without its pond!
Fleet Pond Society (patron Chris Packham) was formed in 1976 and its volunteeers carry out conservation and maintenance work on the nature reserve, which is owned by Hart District Council. It also has an educational role, promoting the nature reserve in the local community.
In 2010 Chris Packham's video help to launch the Clearwater Campaign in order to raise the substantial funds needed to dredge the pond, prevent further silting up and restore reedbeds and biodiversity. Since then various grants have enabled Hart District Council to start on restoration works but there is still a lot to do and much more funding is needed.
